The annual CPHC conference will take place on 7th and 8th April and will focus on the 'Future of Computing'. The aim of the conference is to cover the strategic and operational issues for the HE computing community over the next few years.

The first day of the conference is open to CPHC members and will begin with the CPHC AGM and will then move on to sessions on the future of computing and social media in computing education. Speakers for the day include Professor Anthony Finkelstein (UCL), Gareth Williams (Skyscanner), Chris Millward (HEFCE) and Dr Liam Blackwell (EPSRC) among others.

The second day of the conference is open to all and will feature a keynote speech from the Rt Hon David Willetts MP Minister of State for Universities and Science. This will be followed by a workshop on reviewing the QAA Subject Benchmark Statement for Computing. The afternoon will be a session hosted by the BCS Academy of Computing and will focus on the work of Computing At School (CAS) and the various initiatives taking place across the UK.

I wonder whether the "Future of Computing" in HE is really coincident with the future of computing as experienced by those in industry or, indeed, the rest of the world. No discussion of the way in which Cloud Computing is likely to concentrate computing resources and skills into a small number of very large global players, hollowing out the IT skills in most other companies and industries and giving them unprecedented access to and control over data. How, then, will other players find the skills to create competitive solutions based on "machine learning"?
